Submissions

We are often asked about submitting pictures to Know Your Ships. Submissions are welcome, with the following criteria.

♦ The deadline for photos is Dec. 1 for the following year's edition.

♦ We are looking for pictures of boats that were newsworthy during the year, such as renames or new boats (including salties), or photos taken at unusual angles and unusual locations.

♦ Pictures should have been taken on sunny days, fairly close up and technically competent (not washed out or out of focus). Best thing to do is look in a Know Your Ships and see what kind of photos are there.

DIGITAL IMAGES

Photos from a 5 megapixel camera or higher are needed (typical file sizes are between 2 and 8 MB). You may submit pictures by email (up to 10 MB per email) or burned to a CD or DVD and mailed in. Please do not attempt to alter the images (reduce size, sharpen or color correct in Photoshop or other image-editing software). We will do that in accordance with the needs of the printer.

PRINTS

Pictures scanned on a home scanner are not acceptable because most inexpensive scanners do not produce the quality needed for professional reproduction. Original prints or slides are best. We will return them if a stamped self addressed envelope is enclosed. Otherwise we will keep them on file for future consideration.

Finally, please remember that many people are submitting pictures and space in the book is limited. We get hundreds of images and cannot possibly use everything that gets sent in. We will make every effort to use truly outstanding photos, but other factors besides quality are taken into consideration. For example, we try not to use pictures of the same vessel two years in a row. We also try to give priority to those individuals who have helped us on the book in one way or another and receive no other compensation for their work.

Know Your Ships is sold at many bookstores, gift shops and other retail outlets around the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, including those that follow. Barnes & Noble carries Know Your Ships in some of their outlets and will special order. In Canada, the book is sold at many Coles, Chapters and Indigo books outlets; check with the store closest to your location.
